Hi all. i'm 28 (29 next week), recently married to a great guy, and happily childfree.
That said...my Mom has the Baby Rabies. She desperately wants grandchildren and is about as subtle as Ayn Rand in her demands for me to breed. Despite my repeated assertions that i cannot have healthy children and wouldn't want them if i could. She gives me the usual litany of, "Oh, it's different when they're yours," and "You're not a real woman til you've had a baby," etc.
She has even gone so far as to offer to adopt and raise any spawn i may produce. (But, for some reason, when i suggest she foster/adopt an existing child who badly needs it, she tells me i'm being "ridiculous" and "selfish.") It's not that i hate kids-i have two nephews and a pile of baby cousins, whom i love dearly and spoil as much as possible-it's just that i don't see the need to reproduce, at great personal risk, just to satisfy some ludicrous notion of femininity.
That being said--my Mom, for Christmas this year, gave me maternity clothes. Because of course i was just waiting for the right apparel to change my mind.
This is not the most insane thing she's done in her quest for grandchildren, oh no. Last year we were chatting on the phone & she came out with, "Oh, i can't believe i didn't think to save some of your (dead) brother's sperm!! You could have HIS baby!"
So, you know. i'm glad this community exists.

I was having a terrible time looking for a tutorial online for this (the one from HGTV is TERRIBLE), and a friend of mine helped me find a couple. This one was helpful for figuring out the sides. I figured out a lot of the rest on my own, and the top flaps are my own design.
I did the sides in vinyl, which kind of worked. I used about a fat quarter's worth of fabric for the lining. It turned out a little wonky, but I think that's because of the vinyl sides. Oh well, I know for next time.
Click here to go to the photo set at my flickr with pictures from almost every step That way I don't spam you with pictures. :D
Yup, It was my day off, and I got a lot done.

I've wanted to post this for a while now, but ugh, life gets in the way.
I got married on Oct 24, 2009. Chris and I decided to go for a sort of creepy halloween-esque wedding, but we didn't want to go overboard. Here is what we got :)
[Unknown LJ tag]

My Dress

The Cake Topper :)

The Cake (we made it look like the inside of an old Victorian haunted house :) )

Bride and Groom :)

(stole his hat)
</lj>
I wish I could find the pic of the head table. We had a black cloth over it, and cobwebs all over the front. We each had black ceramic goblets; I got one for each of the girls that said "Poison", "Wicked", "Arsenic", and... something else I can't remember. Anyway, hope you enjoy! :)

So now its a case of finding someone who makes something like this locally and seeing how much something like this would cost.
I saw this on STFU, Parents and while most of the stuff on there just makes me roll my eyes, this actually pissed me off pretty good.

Hi all!
So my sister is getting married in a couple of months. I'm not in the wedding (*whew* I've been in ENOUGH weddings already. :D ) but stated that anything they wanted me to do I'd be happy to do.
Her Maid Of Honor (known as the MoH, she's awesome) called and asked if I would like to make a card box for the bridal shower and wedding. I was completely stoked to do it.
I originally was going to make a sewn bag, to stretch over some sort of a frame, as sewing is normally my forte. But I was having trouble trying to make that work.
And then I found the kraft paper boxes at Joann.
The only guide from the MoH and my sister was to use the color scheme from the invitations. This is what I came up with:

Some wristwarmers made out of sock yarn and crocheted tightly. They should be warm without being bulky.
And a beret from self patterning yarn.
( more pics of the beret after the cut )
I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy about this now, so I thought I'd share here.
I've complained about my mom before here. I've never really wanted children ever since I was a teen, but my mom had the tendency to "prime" me by bingo-ing me every chance she got. "Oh, you'll change your mind!" "Well, you'll find the right person..." "Well, when you have children..."
In my later years (when my cf choice solidified), I avoided talking to my mother about my choices because of her previous attitude. I didn't feel like I could open up to her. She's not a bad person, but I never counted on her for support. She was just way too traditional in general. However, she's finally changed.
( Cut for length )
Just saying, people CAN change, and there IS some hope. Don't give up on people completely :).

I bought $80 worth of silk flowers for $40 yesterday!!! To say that I'm ecstatic about said purchase would be an understatement.
I got to work with my garden last night.

Basically, a hospital in New York is being sued by an ER nurse who was "forced" to help with a 2nd trimester abortion, without which the woman would have died.
These fucking people. DO YOUR JOB OR GET A FUCKING NEW ONE.
ETA: I was wandering from comment to comment and stumbled on this comment. I think it's SO true:
"According to a Gallup poll from July, 60 percent of Americans think abortion should be either illegal or 'legal only in a few circumstances.' " Clinic workers have a dark joke about people with this opinion: They want exceptions for rape, incest, and "me".
Okay, so the UK is kinda hit by snowfall at the moment, which to some of you from colder climes will mean not a lot - but 3 inches here is enough to stop trains and shut airports. Seriously. So I'm working from home owing to the trains not running.
Snow = lots of excited kids outside. Not a problem for me, they stay off my property and we're cool. Have fun! The UK doesn't see weather like this very often after all. But I did have to (first politely, then not quite so politely) tell a bunch of kids off for building a snowman. Why? Because they were building it on MY driveway right behind my car. Therefore making it doubly annoying that they were a) on my property and b) blocking my car in.
So I went out and asked them to take down Mr Snowman as it was blocking my car, and politely reminded them that if you want to build snowmen on other people's property it is polite to ask first. One of the kids said their mommy said they could build it here so I asked if they could go get mommy please. Which they did.
I asked her if her kids could please take down the snowman because it was blocking my car in. She told me to "stop being so fucking grumpy" (nice language there lady in front of 8 year olds) and marched the kids off. My arthritic limbs didn't appreciate being out in the snow demolishing a snowman with a shovel but hey, I did it. Had to get the fecking car out somehow.
She just knocked on the door a few minutes ago and told me that her kids were crying because I had destroyed their snowman. I replied back "yeah, but I managed to get my car out and basically that's all I was concerned with". Closing the door behind me. Like I said, a small incident but noteworthy.

Happy New Year everyone!

You may recall that I posted about making this top last spring, well, I finally got around to quilting it, and it's my first finish of 2010.

( Holding true to my new determination to take my time with my quilts to let them be what they need or want or are fated to be )

This might be me being a total bampot, but I was curious.
If pro-lifers consider the child to start living from the moment of conception, does that mean they have to have a funeral if (god forbid) a pro-lifer miscarried? This is a genuine question as opposed to my usual outright sarky-ness concerning anti-choice people.
